Permissions getting corrupted are unfortunately a common problem on HFS+ filesystems. OS X will even refuse to load kernel extensions (drivers) if they’ve got slightly incorrect permissions (0644 instead of 0664 for instance) which can lead to some very confusing problems, especially on hackintoshes.

Thanks for the suggestion, and honesty about your bias I did try to look at spinvox, but their website is rubbish and I could see no way of signing up to their voicemail package. I can totally see the benefit of a service like yours, but in the end, for me, I’m liking my solution – each to their own

Thanks for passing on the Dilbert video; it had me laughing! Tweeting that now.

One thing you might consider is signing up for one of these services that converts your voicemails to text and sends them to your cell phone and/or email. You still get the messages, but you can skim them more easily in text. GoogleVoice offers a free option with a low-grade conversion. GotVoice offers a pay version that has 99% accurate transcriptions (full disclosure: I work for GotVoice, so I’m a little biased. But also happy to get your feedback if you try it.)

What do you think? Have you tried something like this yet?

Hi there, that’s some nice use of layers. You must have one heavy piece of lens equipment or a very unstable tripod! Either way, good job on adapting your technique to take these shots.

I think i need to “get back into the swing of “shooting” things and events” too! Now, where’s that camera…

You are most welcome I think its ridiculous when people (especially councils) list things/amenities (like parking) in a text list with addresses… why do they think people need the information? Obviously to deduce which one is most convenient, seeing this on a map is usually always the best way to go.

I think you missed the point – and I bet you didn’t think I’d approve this comment! I’m not expecting adulation, but I guess I should spell it out.

If someone gives you something, what do you say? Even when you buy a cup of coffee, you say something to the person that serves you… It takes about 5 seconds to say thank you, and in that light I thank you for your comment – you’ve reassured me that I did the right thing to take the link down.

The majority of internet users take too many things for granted, I count you in this category. I wonder, would you have bothered to comment at all, if the link was still up – my money would say no.

I am with Tiscali and lost connection on 4th. We called 6th and were advised it would be up by the end of the week. We then called on 11th and were advised it would be back on 13th (Monday) They gave us a number for local updates and it states that the line is fine, I asked them to check it and they said no its definitly down (good helpline). Then were advised again it would be up by the end of the week, and guess what it’s still not back. Each time you get someone else fobbing you off telling you it’s out of thier hands. I will be calling today when I get home if its not up and asking for some compensation. I know the bill isn’t much but its hardly the point, I mean its been 18 days now with no connection at all.

Contrary to what Amanda Seales was told, Tiscali Engineers will not be in BT’s Deep Level tunnels. A lot of delays have been caused by BT/openreach Management arguing over which cables to repair first, there are not only fibre cables down there, the majority are copper cables. Does anyone know who was “controlling” the boring machine that entered the Deep Level tunnel? The boring machine also hit electricity cables.

Hi, I am with Tiscali also and I am up near Edinburgh. I have been without internet access since Sat 04 April and every time I email them or phone them they tell me the same excuse (as above.) I emailed them this morning and told them I would be cancelling my account and they replied with yet another line saying that it will possibly be fixed today but can’t guarantee it. Sick of them; my contract runs out in May so will definately be changing then. I had a look at the terms and it does say they are not responsible for 3rd party actions – there’s a surprise!!!

I live in North Norfolk and have had no broadband since Monday night and it is now Saturday. I have telephoned Tiscali numerous times and have been fobbed off with a different story from every person I talk to. One of them said the problem was resolved and another says it is ongoing and Tiscali engineers are now helping BT down the tunnel. Another lady said we would be receiving Â£10 compensentation – I won’t hold my breath for that.

I’m with Tiscali and live in west sussex and haven’t had any broadband since sunday, it’s now good friday. As above I just can’t understand why this isn’t on the news. The only thing I can think of is if it has security implications for the country?

Internet services have definitely been disrupted. I’m up in Scotland and have not been able to access the internet from my home since Sunday (5th April) and it’s now Thursday! I’m surprised that no news of this has been on the radio or TV – after all there must be thousands who are also in a similar position. What were they boring for – oil?

We are with tiscali and every night since the weekend we loose the internet at approx 9.30 There message is that it is the effect of the damage done on Saturday at the Olympic site Getting a bit fed up with it now

Agreed, I made the assumption that the provider would be multi-homed anyway, perhaps I shouldn’t work on that assumption, after seeing the “hosting infrastructure” of a recent company we were doing due diligence on for a banking client. Everything running off of one leased line, all ecommerce transactions, all for a million TO business, that makes all its money from the web… groovy!

I can guarantee that internet circuits have definately been affected. I think it may be a large internet pipe as broadband users from a large part of south essex have been disconnected from the internet. BT seem to be playing this down somewhat.

Yes achievable but I would have to use a multihomed IP address. A physical failover will be simply too slow.

The problem with multiple IPs is this is that clients don’t like the idea or the complexity of having to manage and run mirrored web architectures. The costs of scaling will be twice/triple or quadruple as much and then there’s the issue of synchronising data between the sand boxed environments.
