I have a parking space… in Mayfair!

November 29th, 2006

Since I began working on Berkeley IT full time in August of this year, my daily commute from Reading has been somewhat “long”. Usually I would drive to London, parking 10 minutes by foot away from Gunnersbury tube station, then take a District Line tube to Hammersmith (if it ever showed up!), tube to Green Park, then finally a gentle 5 min stroll to the office.

Yes… a 3 stage journey to the office every morning involving getting up at 0445 and getting to the office for 0730. Considering I wasn’t finishing up here till 2200/2300 most nights, getting home wasn’t much fun either.

Yesterday I finally bought a space in the Audley Street car park, literally around the corner from the office. Now I can drive straight into Mayfair, park up, and be in the office within minutes. Its not cheap, but the time and energy saved more than covers the annual cost. On the plus side I get a free copy of the FT every morning :)

(1 minute walk… if that)

I guess now I’ll have no excuse to not go to the gym after work, as I can hop in the car around 2000 and head over to The Strand (where the gym is). There is a downside to all this “being nearer the office” lark… I can now work till 2300 without worrying about the journey home… Going to the gym at 2000 sounds like a much better idea for my health though :)

And if you’d like to see something really amusing, check out what I parked my little Citroen Ax between this morning.

Yep, that’s right, Aston, Aston, Citroen, Aston :) Can’t wait to pick up my new car on Saturday :)

Finally moving in the right direction!

What a day!

October 10th, 2006

Firstly I think Krishna (God) should be thanked for looking after me today and steering me in such a mercifully generous way :)

Well its been one of “those” days, where everything seems to have gone my way.  Days like today make me love what I do, and for a 22 year old to love getting up at 0445 and getting to bed at 0100 on a daily basis, there has to be some love there!

My day was thrown off a little this morning as my first meeting started at 0700.  My regular 0445 start usually gets me to the office for 0730, so I ended up getting up at 0400 and leaving home by about 0500 to get to Picadilly Circus in time (just down the road from the office).  The day seemed to promise bad things, the 0608 district line tube from Gunnersbury (I park my little day to day car there as its free) just didnt show up and no one seemed to mind or say anything; so at around 0620 I wandered out onto the road to look for a cab (which is generally fun at that time of the morning!).  So there I am waiting for a taxi to pass by and when one does this woman runs from behind me and jumps in it – although I had clearly flagged it down… great start.  I managed to catch a bus to Shepherds bush tube station and from there a tube to Oxford Circus and onto my destination.  I arrived at 0705, which was good going seeing as the wonderful public transport system had let me down… never rely on public transport!

Anyway after a most excellent morning speant with them (making some good contacts, and maybe some sales, we shall see) I headed to the office – enroute I found out that one of our big banking customers was having issues with their email infrastructure in India – not good, but as always my team sorted it out quickly, the issue was resolved in 18 mins or so.  Obviously they lost no email during this time – what with our super doopery SLA and distributed enterprise email platforms.

From then on the day just got better and better, from winning some sizeable work for a public sector project (which is going to be huge and will mean that I disappear off the face of the Earth for the first few months of next year).  I had a wonderful lunch with a highly experience FD/CFO type, who was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to share contacts and help us out however he could.  I enjoyed the look of disbelief on his face when we played the “how old do you think I am?” game.  He guessed 33-35 (I am actually 22)… maybe this is why I never meet any nice ladies… actually it would be those 17-18 hour days I work, but anyway.  My last meeting of the day gained me an invite to a closed meeting with a handful of CEOs/CFOs from some of the top UK based companies… so all in all a good day :)

I leave the boys with this gift (sorry girls no gifts – though I highly doubt if anyone female would read my blog!);

Right its 1922 and I’ve got a few more hours worth of “work” to do still.  I love my “job” :)
