Tweeted about this a while ago, but its brilliant, so if you’ve not seen it;
Ocean explorer Robert Ballard takes us on a mind bending trip to hidden worlds underwater, where he and other researchers are finding unexpected life, resources, even new mountains. He makes a case for serious exploration and mapping. Google Ocean, anyone?
Some extracts from the talk that I really enjoyed and got me thinking;
“The mid-oceanic ridge covers almost 23% of the Earths total surface area.”
Robert poses an interesting series of question;
“Why are we not looking at moving out onto the sea? Why do we have programs to build habitation on Mars and we have programs to look at colonising the Moon but we do not have a program looking at how we colonise our own planet and the technology is at hand.”
Another amazing presentation give at the TED conference in March 2008!
Hacker and writer Joshua Klein is fascinated by crows. (Notice the gleam of intelligence in their little black eyes?) After a long amateur study of corvid behavior, he’s come up with an elegant machine that may form a new bond between animal and human.
This was presented to TED (http://www.ted.com) a little while ago.
This is amazing! Disturbing, but amazing!
Levi Strauss are celebrating getting onto YouTube’s coveted “most viewed” spot with their “back-flipping jeans” video clip. Since Monday, it has clocked up 1.4 million views and no doubt it isn’t doing any harm to the Levi Strauss sales targets either.
The company insists that no trickery was performed. The people in the clip are all professionals. They wore silk boxers and the jeans are starched.
I came across this concept while watching some old episodes of King of Queens… SlamBall… its **SERIOUSLY** cool… I think i’ve found the next extreme sport I want to try my hand at.
Going by the age of some of the videos on YouTube, this has been around for a while, but I’m only just hearing about it. I guess its like Parkour, I was doing “Parkour” for years before I found out what it was. So basically I was jumping off of things, running up walls, generally being a muppet.
One night, in a very tired “having been in the datacenter for far too long” haze, I came across this while I was waiting for data to move around. At the time I thought it was hilarious, now I’m not so sure…
So what exactly is cloud computing - well Ed Felten explains in the following video.
The video begins with an introduction by several Princeton officials. Ed’s presentation starts about 6:20 into the video, which runs 38 minutes.
Now this is cool, built around a Lotus shell, with an electric 73bhp engine, capable of 74mph.
Environmentally friendly, no congestion TAX (yes its a tax!), and its capable of diving underwater ![]()
Rinspeed’ sQuba, enjoy;
This ugly thing will be hitting our streets in 2009, supposedly with a 4.8l 500BHP v8… I wonder if they will keep putting the engine in the wrong place…
I’m sure some of you out there think this is a good looking car… you don’t really deserve sight…
